| Kites Review
Synopsis - J or Jai (Hrithik Roshan) is a person living in Vegas in search of luck. Finally lucky charm came in form of Jia (Kangana Ranaut),a rich casino owner's daughter, when she proposes him. There he falls in love with his future brother in law's fiancee,Nathasha (Barbara Mori) where he had to make a choice between money n love. Script - This film considered to be Hrithik Roshan's attempt to expose him as an international brand n thus attract some Hollywood eyes.So the script is packaged in such a manner where it gives more value to Hrithik's skills as an actor, dancer n stuntman. But the writers (Anurag Basu,Robin Bhatt etc) failed to bring up an innovative storyline to support Hrithik Roshan. Before the release,I already had an idea about how well can be Rakesh Roshan's Story gonna look. Its just a typical Bollywood Love Story taken in Hollywood style frames n action. But it lacks innovation, grip, pace n above all novelty.Just like someone said,Too Many Cooks Spoil the Broth,Too many writers failed to communicate with each other to bring out a decent script.Anurag Basu who was credited with the script of Gangster n Metro should have done the job alone.Plus the film had more English n Spanish dialogues than Hindi.Hope this won't backfire.Plus they left a loads of space just for action.Blasting n Crashing cars won't narrate a story.

| Direction - I would have easily told the Visuals were great. But again its Deja Vu for people who follows Hollywood films. The Action sequences were lifted from Bad Boys II,the Road Scenes (with locations) looked very much similar to Susan Saradon n Geena Davis starrer "Thelma n Louise".The director again failed to maintain pace in this film. That mainly because of the reasons mentioned before.Inspite of being just above 2 hrs,I had to look at my watch at regular intervals. One place I have to appreciate Anurag Basu was the casting of Barbara Mori.Very rarely will you see non desi actors overshadowing our stars in our films. The film lacked the poetic effect of Gangster (which was a love story) n the climax shot was just a rehash of it.But driving from Vegas to Mexico with a tired body n a bullet was bit too incredible . | |

| Music & Background Score - Dil Kyu Yeh Mera...happens to be the best song n well picturised out of the list.Zindagi...is another noticable number.Tum Bhi Ho Wahi...has been picturised during a hot chase scene which I didn't personally appreciate. Then the dance number Fire n another song to display Hrithik's singing ability...Kites in the Sky which I liked just because of its picturisation.
Technical Expertise - Cinematography will surely earn the respect of any critic.Ayank Bose has done a terrific job in terms of framing (Especially during the action sequences),colour tone (use of neon lights, black n white colour n postcard effect).Action Scenes are good but as mentioned inspired.Choreography was excellent.Hrithik's make up after the disaster was great n Barbara looked really lovely.

| Cast & Performance - We know Hrithik Roshan is perhaps the most hardworking actor after Aamir Khan in Bollywood. He looked hand in glove to the role J.As Salsa Dancer,he danced well,He performed stunts scenes well (eventhough I didn't feel his scenes were taken efficiently). But He wasn't effective as an actor in this film because it got heavily overshadowed by his body show n previously mentioned reasons. For me,his best performance happens to be in Lakshya.Barbara Mori as Nathasha aka Linda was the show stealer. Her smile is so magnetic that it will remain in your mind if nothing from the film remains. She handled her character gloriously n didn't show an signs of insecurity. The only other character I remember a bit is the guy who played Hrithik's buddy Robby.Kangana seems to have earned the Drug Addict Icon of India.Just like Metro,Gangster,Woh Lamhe,Fashion, here also she had to play the role of a terribly disturbed gal.The guy who played the role of her brother was a big bore.Kabir Bedi had to do whatever he usual does in Hindi films.Special Mention - There is special body show by Kangana,Barabara n of course Hrithik Roshan.
Production Value - Spent Rs 140 crores for blasting a few cars n using Vegas n Mexico as locations??....Well...the film didn't have the look of a 140 crore.I felt a 65 crore Sivaji looked far more grand than this.Actually still wondering where did the 140 crore was spent since Hrithik,Rakesh,Rajesh r all part of the producers' team.
On whole...This Film is all hype n nothing to live upon.Its more like U R expecting a Well (water) n ended up as a mirage.Just for some glamourous shots,Barbara Mori,Hrithik Roshan's skills,U may give it a try...else U won't b disappointed to avoid....2.5/10 experience for me.

'Kites' grosses over Rs 60 crore in three days
Rakesh Roshan has hit out at the critics of Hrithik Roshan starrer 'Kites' saying despite poor reviews, the film has grossed over Rs 60 crore in the first three days of its release.
"On the first day, the movie grossed Rs 21 crore. On Saturday, it earned Rs 20 crore and then on Sunday the collections increased by another Rs 21 crore," producer Rakesh Roshan told reporters.
The total three-day box-office collections, therefore, stand at Rs 62 crore.
"There has been no drop in collections. Going by the kind of reviews which we have got, the film should have been flopped by now," Roshan said while hitting out at film critics for rejecting the movie.

| Kites review: Stylish, but dissappointing... film: kites (hinglish) theatre: new a/c dts ufo, thiruvananthapuram date and time: 25-05-2010, 11 30 am status: balcony 60%, reserved 35%
kites, directed by Anurag basu is noway special. It is just a rehash of many times told love story. This time, the love is between an indian born youth J(Hrithik Roshan) in las vegas, falling love with mexican girl Linda alias Natasha(Barbara mori). Linda cant speak hindi or english and J cant speak Spanish. But they fell in love... The story takes a turn when J attacks Linda's would be and millionaire Tony and elopes with Linda. The chase begins then and Tony is all set to destroy the pair...
There is nothing new in story, script and twists in the film. Also most twists are predictable too.. The director , who had proved his caliber in earlier works, wants to make the film special, but the below average script prevents him from doing so. Anyway he was successful in giving the film an international flavor and colour.
The lead pair makes us watch the movie without boredom. As in his earlier movies, hrithik excels in dancing and action sequences. Barbara mori is cute and sexy.
The background music by salim sulaiman suits the mood and camera by ayananka bose is super. Music by Rajesh roshan is just average. I dont feel there is any other sections in the film which can be mentioned as positives. Totally, Kites is charming, but it is flying without any strings. So cant predict where it goes or how it lands...

| Box Office: Kites first week collections; Rajneeti and Raavan preview Friday, May 28, 2010
As per early week figures coming in, Kites, falling further is wrapping up with Rs. 37-39 crores with single screens having abandoned the film and multiplexes abandoning it mid-week just about as well. The film recorded collections less than a third of the actual collection capacity as occupancies ranged around 18%-34%, worst for a Hrithik Roshan film since perhaps 2002. And given the extreme costs, this one is a bigger loser than the likes of Shahrukh Khan's My Name is Khan.
The actor's core base of support appears to be no longer be there as in the hindi heartland centers of UP, MP, occupancies were as low as 15%. So they bailed pretty early. Interestingly in the south, such as Vishakhapatnam the film did fare better doing around 50%. Chennai, Tamil Nadu tried to carry Kites with response being around 80% in some theaters. But Tamil Nadu centers are marginal in the overall scheme for a Hindi film. And problem for Kites was it was rejected as a Hindi film but not accepted in a big way elsewhere either, in terms of box office turnover.
Whatever money Reliance ended up making from 3 Idiots it's fearing may lose in Kites, and they are hoping Raavan doesn't follow next.
Raavan maybe one film where Tamil Nadu may be more relevant. The Vikram - Aishwarya Rai - Abhishek Bachchan fare Raavan where Tamil Nadu may show better numbers than other parts of India because bulk of lead cast and director: Aishwarya Rai, Vikram, Mani Ratnam; they are all South Indians and the film maybe caters more to sensibilities in parts of Tamil Nadu. However there then the Tamil version (Ravanan) will likely fare better than Hindi version, so it remains to be seen how Raavan fares in the end in totality.
In between next week releases, Ranbir Kapoor-Katrina Kaif-Manoj Bajpai starrer Rajneeti. Raavan (both versions) is a 100 crore film and Rajneeti around 45-50 crores.
